Tips To Enjoy Training Your Dog From Veterinary Clinic Rockwall

Dog training will lead to a healthier, happier pet and a more gratifying connection with your puppy. Your puppy will know how to behave and you will also know how you can control the behavior of your dog as well. Your dog will be safer and more content and so will you.

Spaying or neutering your dog is not only a satisfactory way to avoid litters of puppies, but it is beneficial for your dog’s health. Also, it will reduce many aggression complications and you will have fewer behavior complications.

In order to circumvent boredom, it is recommended that you have a habit for either walks and exercise or a play session. This can help your dog avoid the boredom that can lead to detrimental behavior.

A reward does not necessarily have to be food. It can be a walk in the park, playing in the yard, riding in the car or even just a hug and pat on the head. Love and affection should not be withdrawn, as your dog will do just about anything for that alone. This is a great way to uphold your puppy’s enthusiasm to please you.

When you bring a new puppy home you need to establish the ground rules right away. A puppy can quickly develop bad habits if they are not stopped right away but they can also learn very quickly what is okay behavior and what is not. Puppies can be very charming and lovable but they need obedience to build excellent behavior early on.

In order to keep your puppy’s attention you can do things that he enjoys but you must also reward him for little successes. Do not present a food reward every time, however, because intermittent reinforcement is actually much more helpful than constant reinforcement because he never realizes when he will get the treat so he will keep doing the behavior on the hope that he will get the food reward. Also too many food treats can be bad for your dog’s health and weight. However, love and attention should be always given.

Most dogs are exceptionally smart and they are enthusiastic to learn. They can also be very sensitive to the care and attention given to them by their trainers and caregivers. Therefore it is smart to have patience and train your dog with love rather than with force or yelling because he can easily end up afraid of you and all of your training will then be for naught. If you want a enduring, well-adjusted and adoring rapport with your puppy he must believe you completely.

Training your dog with positive reinforcement will speed up the training process and it will make it more simple and much more satisfying. Your puppy only wants to delight you and if you give him positive reinforcement, he will carry on to do what you want and he will do whatsoever you ask of him. He will be pleased to make you happy and you will be happy when your training just gets easier and easier.

A Beginner’s Guide To Housebreaking A Puppy by Veterinary Clinic Rockwall

It takes time and patience to housebreak a puppy. You need to understand that the learning skills of your puppy can be entirely different from the skills of another, and that the training cannot be rushed through.

It is thought that the best approach to housebreaking a puppy is to set, and stick to, a simple routine. If you are consistent with your training, your puppy will learn faster and better; soon enough he will defecate and urinate on his own.

The next step you need to take to housebreak your puppy is to determine the area of your yard that will become the dogs potty area. Your chosen place will become your puppy’s outdoors comfort zone, and is where the actual training will take place.

What you should do is take your puppy to the potty area every day. Wait around in the area until it begins to defecate or urinate, and then give the puppy a treat, or show it some love. You will have to do this to give your pet the cue that it is doing what you want and that you are pleased with its behavior.

Talk to your puppy as much as you can whilst its in the potty area, using phrases like ‘go pee’ and ‘go poo’. Keep the phrases short and simple, and use a consistent tone, and your puppy will quickly learn to recognize what you are saying.

Another consideration you should commit to memory is when you feed your puppy. Housebreaking a puppy can definitely be made easier if he has a consistent feeding schedule.

Feed your puppy according to a schedule so that you can start to learn its bowel patterns and urine habits. You decrease the likelihood of your puppy defecating or urinating inside the house if you know about what times of day it normally needs to relieve itself.

If your dog has arthritis, or is aging and getting less spry, then one of the best dog beds to buy might just be a memory foam bed. Memory foam in human beds molds around the person, giving total support to each part of their body. The tiny polyurethane cells then return to their original shape when the person gets up and the cells get cooler. This type of bed is used to help people with arthritis or with spine or hip injuries, so manufacturers of pet supplies eventually realized that this type of pet bed might provide the same benefits for dogs with such problems.

Rockwall Veterinary Clinic Tip: Buy Memory Foam For Your Dog’s Bed

Think of the comfort derived from memory foam beds for humans, then imagine how such beds on a smaller scale might be the best dog beds as well. Memory foam provides good support for people with arthritis or joint problems by molding itself to their body as they sleep, and then returning to its normal shape when they get out of bed. Imagine what it could do for dogs with similar joint or muscle problems. Many manufacturers of quality dog beds now offer memory foam beds for the benefit of such dogs.

The best dog beds for joint problems like this should provide a cushion that reduces pressure, to relieve the pain of the joints themselves and the accompanying muscles. Memory foam gives that sort of support. This is especially good for larger dogs, because many are prone to hip dysplasia, a degenerative joint disease where hip joints don’t always fit properly and the muscles near the rump are weak. Large dog beds made of memory foam can relieve aggravation of the affected limbs when the dog lies down, or ease sore muscles on dogs that have worked hard during the day.

Many people provide heated beds for their dogs with joint troubles, but it’s likely that memory foam is equally advantageous. One benefit of memory foam is its ability to breathe. Which means it holds in heat throughout winter, yet is cooler in the summertime when overheating might otherwise be a problem.

The additional wintertime heat of memory foam is what may make it the superior material for a pet afflicted with arthritis, because not only can it preserve the pet’s body heat when it’s required, but it also can provide a shield against ground temperatures that may become a little bit too cold at night.

Keep in mind that even if these small memory foam mattresses are the best dog beds when it comes to support and comfort, you’d still have to guard against an over enthusiastic chewer. You’d need a sturdy cover to put over the mattress to keep the dog from chewing on the polyurethane. But memory foam can help provide excellent orthopedic dog beds for older dogs or those with arthritis or other joint problems. It might be worth going that extra mile if it can help your dog sleep more comfortably.

Reinforcement Dog Training Techniques From Veterinary Clinic Rockwall

Dog obedience is very important, so it is wise to train a dog early and thoroughly. There are a wide variety of different training methods for dogs, and what works for some dogs may not work for others. Many people train their own dogs, while other people turn to obedience schools for dog training. Here are some basic tips on dog training that we hope you can put to good use.

The first and most common form of training for dogs is positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcement simply means doing something positive for the dog to reward correct behavior. This can come in the form of physical or audible praise, or more effectively, in the form of a doggie treat. Pet owners often give dogs a treat to reward good behavior, as this is one of the surest ways to ensure the dog repeats those good behaviors in the future.

At the other end of the spectrum is negative reinforcement. Negative reinforcement can come in the form of a tap on the butt or the obligatory “bad dog,” spoken aloud. A more extreme form of negative reinforcement used to curb bad behavior can come by way of the utilization of a shock collar.

Incessant barking can be a major issue for some pet owners and may be eliminated with a particular method of dog training. By using what is known as a “bark collar” this issue may be eliminated over time. These collars emit a low-voltage electrical shock each time the dog barks and over the course of the dog wearing the collar, barking will eventually stop.

Another form of electrical negative reinforcement that follows the same theory is the shock collar for the invisible fence. The invisible fence will set up boundaries for the dog. After the dog gets a few shocks from trying to cross the boundary, the dog will eventually learn where it can and cannot go.

Housebreaking a dog is a very important step during training. Both types of reinforcements should be implemented, keeping the negative reinforcement extremely mild. When a dog goes to the bathroom outside, she should be rewarded. If she goes to the bathroom inside, use mild dicipline. A dog’s name should not be used for negative reinforcement as the dog may think he is just being summoned.

Training a dog is by no means easy but is well worth the time and effort as a dog can serve as a companion, guardian, or helper. Exercising patience during the dog training assures great results and helps build trust between owner and dog. A well-trained dog is an untiring pleasure that everyone can enjoy.

Barking varies from dog to dog and from breed to breed, with some dogs naturally barking louder than others, but it's always your responsibility to make sure that your dog doesn't bother the people living with you or around you. You have the options of training your dog, having someone train it, or simply get a dog bark collar.

Dog Bark Collar Guide From Rockwall Veterinary Clinic

Barking is the only way your dog has to express its emotions, be it fear, aggressiveness, or hunger. But when barking becomes too frequent or too loud, both owners and neighbors can begin to resent the dog. You may be familiar with this situation if you have a dog that just won’t stop barking, keeping everybody awake at night. Barking varies from dog to dog and from breed to breed, with some dogs naturally barking louder than others, but it’s always your responsibility to make sure that your dog doesn’t bother the people living with you or around you. You have the options of training your dog, having someone train it, or simply get a dog bark collar.

A dog bark collar is perhaps the best way to significantly lessen excessive barking, if not to stop it altogether. There are three different types of anti-bark collars to choose from — the ‘Citronella’ dog bark collar; ‘electronic shock’ collar (or E-collar); and the ‘ultrasonic’ dog bark collar. These three types of anti-bark collars have proven highly effective in significantly reducing or stopping dogs from barking continuously.

The Citronella Spray Collar

The citronella collar is so called because it sprays your dog’s muzzle with citronella essence whenever your dog barks. The citronella oil is quite common in products where a strong smell is needed, like certain perfume products. Just like they dislike perfumes, dogs dislike the smell of citronella, which makes the collar quite effective.

The Shocking Collar

This collar is one of the most well known ones. The collar is programmed to detect excessive barking and correcting the dog by delivering a small electric shock, much like the one you get when you handle fabric. The shock increases in intensity every 30 seconds if the dog doesn’t stop barking: probably because the first one was too mild for a dog’s skin to be felt. The collar will continue to increase the intensity of the shocks until it reaches its highest level, at which point it will shut down to avoid harming the dog, who is probably trying to communicate something urgently.

The Ultrasonic Collar

The ultrasound or ultrasonic collar corrects the dog’s barking by emoting a sound that only dogs can hear. This collar’s correction method is effective, yet doesn’t add more noise to an already noisy situation.

Investing in a dog bark collar for your bark-happy, canine pet is one way to demonstrate your commitment to a quiet and peaceful neighborhood. It will also show you are a kind, caring and responsible human being.

Dogs Should Never Consume These Foods and Substances Says Rockwall Veterinary Clinic

Even though a dog may think something is appetizing, and try to eat it, that doesn’t always work out for the dog and his or her health. Some types of foods can cause serious damage to the digestive system of a dog, or in some cases, even quickly cause critical heart problems.

Even some raw vegetables can be bad for a dog. Garlic is an example of something that is natural but still very harmful when consumed for the dog. Garlic salt, garlic powder, and anything made with such ingredients should never be given to a dog. Otherwise the dog will face problems with anemia, where the red blood cells become under attack. Given the severity of the situation, even small amounts should be avoided.

If raw foods such as onion and garlic can cause harm, then of course artificial foods and sweeteners can too. Xylitol is an example of an artificial sweetener that has been known to induce liver failure in dogs when consumed. Xylitol is found in a variety of consumer products, but is easily spotted on the ingredients list for those that want to know what they can feed their dog.

Dairy products and dogs do not mix very well. There are some dogs that are able to “stomach” dairy products, but not every dog has the proper digestive system to take care of the enzymes in most dairy products. This includes milk, sour cream, cheese, and products derived from any of these products. If you notice your dog has diarrhea, it’s possible the problem is with dairy.

Caffeine is one all pet owners should remember. Caffeine can be found in chocolate, coffee, and many types of drinks such as soda. Caffeine will speed up the heart rate of the dog and cause problems to the nervous system. This is why it is urgent that dogs never be fed chocolate, even though the caffeine in chocolate is often just a small amount. Dogs given caffeine will often observe severe heart problems and jitters.

Overall, you must look after your dog and the diet he or she eats. Even feeding a dog table scraps is a poor choice, as dogs need a well-balanced diet to stay healthy. This is also why it is bad for a dog to eat cat food, which some dogs do, as cat food is usually higher in protein and fats than what a dog actually needs in his or her diet.

Feeding a dog is a science. You have to show responsibility in caring for your dog, and brush up on other foods that you should not feed to him or her. Otherwise you may cause unintentional harm to your dog, and in some cases, could face actual legal charges.

Tips On Finding High Quality Cat Supplies From Veterinary Clinic Rockwall

Cat supplies are very easy to look for compared to other kinds of pet supplies. Most cat supplies are just add on accessories that your pet doesn’t really need. To save on money, stick to getting them the basics: litter box, collar, carrier, and litter. Anything else is simply spoiling your cat. First time pet owners should stick to the basics.

The great thing about cats is they are well-behaved and very neat. Unlike dogs, you only need to train them for a short while to act properly in your home. The basic cat supplies only focus on keeping your home clean. As the cat grows up, you won’t have a problem giving it a bath or cleaning up its food. Since they are quite easy to take care of, large cats can live with only having litter boxes, pet carriers, and collars. A litter box is absolutely necessary especially for those caring for kittens.

Unlike dogs, cats prefer to stay still in their environment. However, if they end up walking out of your home, they may not come back again. To counter this occurrence, get the most basic of cat supplies: a collar. The collar will distinguish your cat from the strays around the streets. It will also help your neighbours spot the cat while you are looking for them.

Those who will be away for quite some time can bring a carrier with them. Of all the cat supplies, the carrier is needed most for travel. You can place the carrier in your car. Playful cats should have a larger sized carrier. Others wouldn’t mind staying still in the smaller ones.

Although cats may seem expensive, you can actually save a lot on buying their cat supplies. You can start saving by using stuff around the house. Cats don’t mind playing with old toys or objects that you are not using. All you have to do is observe which things your cat enjoys. Make sure they are not dangerous either.

To get affordable deals on cat supplies, start searching for merchants online. The best sources are established sites. You don’t have to worry about getting ripped off from these websites. Prices online are lower since retailers don’t have to add as much profit compared to major stores.

You can also buy a large quantity of cat supplies at a lower rate with these online sellers. Compared to bulk purchases in nearby pet stores, you can save more and have a steady supply for the cat in the long-run.

Compared to shopping for other pet needs, cat supplies are very easy to understand. If your cat is prone to shedding its fur, you should look into getting stuff to clean the house. Cats like comfort so it wouldn’t hurt to get them a comfortable cushion to stay in. This way you won’t have to worry about cat hairs staying on your couch.

Looking for cat supplies is very easy, both online and offline. The cheapest deals can be taken advantage of from online deals. Pet stores specialize more in attending to specific cat needs. More experienced pet owners usually go to pet stores for their cat supplies. If your cat has a special condition, consult your vet or breeder before buying any of the cat supplies. You wouldn’t want to risk your cat’s life and waste your money at the same time.

Rockwall Veterinary Clinic Guide On Choosing A Dog Breed

When you are choosing a dog breed for your growing family, you might try to find one based on looks alone. However, it is important to consider various things regarding dog breed before picking the perfect dog for your family. They will be a part of your family, so they should be a perfect fit rather than a nuisance.

For families that have small children and are always on the go, a smaller dog may be more appropriate. Examples include Chihuahuas, Pugs, and Jack Russell Terriers. These dogs cannot reach high places like some other dog breeds can, so they may be good for children, who tend to leave things lying around. If a child leaves a ham sandwich on a table and walks away, a small dog cannot reach it while a large one probably can.

Small dogs can also be less dangerous than larger dogs. Even when they do bite, it is more of a nip than a serious wound, though they can cause harm. Trained dogs tend to be less violent, but if you have small children you may be more comfortable with a smaller dog. Children may treat dogs as toys, which can make the dogs act out in ways that they normally would not.

Medium-sized dogs are great for older families that want more protection from their dog but do not want to have to worry about the dangers or mishaps associated with larger dogs. Medium dogs include Beagles, Cocker Spaniels, and Corgis. These breeds are often adorable, yet they do offer some protection. They do not offer the protection of larger dogs, however.

Large dogs are very good at protecting homes, yet they can also be loyal companions. They are great for families that are very organized and are good at keeping important items out of reach of the dog. These dogs are fun because they are so large that it is almost like having another human being in the house. Large breeds include Golden Retrievers, Great Danes, Labradors, and German Shepherds.

Of course, everyone has a different set of preferences when it comes to dog breeds. Some breeds bark more than others, and some are more trainable than others. The most important thing, then, is that the dog that you choose will fit perfectly into your family.

No matter what kind of dog breed you choose, training is an important aspect of how the dog will act. In some ways, training is more important than the size of the dog. With good enough training, a large dog may leave food and other treats within reach alone. This means that some of the advantages of certain dog breeds and types may be extended to other breeds through extensive training.

You can buy just about anything online these days, cars, groceries, a date, even a new dog. It seems strange but people purchase dogs over the internet all the time. Some from breeders clear across the country. It's almost the new designer thing to do. Personally, I think it's ridiculous to purchase a dog across the country when there are so many unwanted dogs right in your own backyard. Why put the poor animal in such a stressful situation for traveling? I think it's cruel but that's just my opinion and may not count for much. So, if you are going to purchase a dog, here are some guidelines to help make the experience a little more pleasurable for both of you.

Rockwall Veterinary Clinic Tips On Buying A Dog Over The Internet

You can buy just about anything online these days: cars, groceries, and even a new dog. It seems strange but people purchase dogs over the internet all the time. Some from breeders clear across the country. It’s almost the new designer thing to do. Personally, I think it’s ridiculous to purchase a dog across the country when there are so many unwanted dogs right in your own backyard. Why put the poor animal in such a stressful situation for traveling? I think it’s cruel but that’s just my opinion and may not count for much. So, if you are going to purchase a dog, here are some guidelines to help make the experience a little more pleasurable for both of you.

The internet has come a long way but it still can’t quite mimic the experience of actually touching and caressing a dog you may have chosen as a potential pet. All you can do is trust that the person selling the dog is being honest with you about the dog’s temperament and demeanor. A picture says a thousand words but unless you can come face to face and interact with the pup, I’m not really sure how you can be certain that he will make the perfect match for your family. But, I digress again. So, how do you choose a dog based on a picture and a paragraph? How do you know if the seller is reputable or not?

When looking online to purchase a dog, be very wary of an ad that professes to be selling ”papered” purebred pups. Does this ad come from a credible licensed breeder or is it just an individual selling his litter of puppies and claiming them to be purebred? It’s pretty tricky because pictures of purebred pups do not resemble their adult counterparts at all so just seeing pictures will not be convincing. They must show proof of AKC membership for both the parents and the puppies as having been certified as purebred. Be sure you get a certificate of authenticity from the American Kennel Club with the appropriate documentation. Do some research ahead of time so you know what you’re looking at when you receive it as these documents can be easily forged as well. Purebred dogs are big business these days and just like anything else worth scamming, this is no exception.

Before you start a random search for reputable breeders, go to the American Kennel Club website and look for the link of approved breeders. I personally would trust the AKC of doing their homework as they would not be putting up breeder’s websites if they haven’t been checked out thoroughly. Even with this knowledge however, do not go head on and purchase a dog outright without doing some checking on your own as well. Play it safe throughout the whole process and if anything feels funny about the way the breeder does business, don’t ignore that feeling. Do a little more research to find out if what they’re doing is common practice among all breeders. Pretend that you are buying a car and that you want to make the best deal possible for what you’re getting even though what you get is far more precious than just a car.

Before you consider the sale complete, have the dog checked out thoroughly by your veterinarian to ensure that he is as healthy as the breeders documents claim him to be. If there is any discrepancy, speak to the seller and discuss what (if anything) needs to be done. There is a chance that the original vet check was indeed valid, and if it is only a minor injury or slight issue, keeping the dog might not be that big of a deal, but you should have part of your purchase price refunded to offset this medical care. Be careful, know what you are looking for and be wary of any thing that sounds far too good to be true.

Dog Toilet Training Guide From Rockwall Veterinary Clinic

Generally, dogs are very clean animals – they won’t soil close to where they eat, or where they sleep. But living in a house is unnatural for an animal whose instincts would be to roam wherever she wants to go, so you will have to help her learn where and when she can relieve herself.

It is essential that you form good toilet habits for your dog as early on as possible. Trying to break the habit of a dog is quite difficult and it can be very frustrating. You need to use guidance and encouragement to help the pet. Animal behaviorists have some helpful tips that you can use to help with the housebreaking of your pet.

Believe it or not, dogs are sanitary creatures. If a dog does soil accidentally in the wrong place, it is likely that it will be far from his dog dish, at least six to ten feet. This is true for the place where the dog sleeps as well. But, unless you find a good place for her to go and train her in that manner, the rest of your house is okay to them.

The process for housebreaking a dog is the same if he is a puppy or an adult dog new to your home. You’ll need to take him outside every few hours and also 30 minutes after he eats. Take your pet to the designated bathroom spot. Stay with the pet until she goes, and then praise her when she does. If she does not go, bring her back inside and try again in fifteen minutes. Watch her though. If the dog starts sniffing and circling take them out right away as this is a sign that she is about to go. Pay attention to her signs and take her out. Soon, she will relate to going outside to going to the bathroom.

Some dogs are housebroken much faster than others. Some dog’s personality will cause her to go one way or the other. But, if you take her outside at the right time, it will go smoother. A puppy of less than four months old will need to go out during the night. Older puppies can hold it that long. A dog that cries to be let out has an urgent need. Get up and take her out, she needs every chance to succeed that she can get. Positive reinforcement is necessary for success.

How you treat accidents will affect your dog’s overall learning curve. If you catch your dog going in the act, distract her with a clap or call her name. Take her outside calmly at that time and praise her for finishing outside. Clean up any accident that you find on the floor. If the dog approaches during this time, ignore her. Don’t talk to or punish her at this point. The worst thing that you can do is to yell at her or physically punish her. This will cause her to fear you and to not bond as well to you. She won’t connect it to the accident at all. Ignoring her is the best course of action here.
