“I don’t even know where to begin. First of all, the vet that we were seeing in Mesquite was not as attentive, nor friendly enough to ask questions about our pet. We care and love our Westie as most owners do. We only want the best care for her.

Rockwall Veterinary Hospital says in today’s society it is acceptable to bring your dog along on vacation. Many things have to be considered when taking your dog on a trip such as what type of transport will be used and what dog travel carriers to use. The following things should be considered for the next trip you take with your dog.

1. What mode of transport will be used?

Services such as Amtrak and Greyhound are no good since they only allow service dogs.

A good option may be the car as it is a controlled environment. You will have to plan your stops carefully as you will require a little more space than a regular stop. The area must be suitable for walking your dog on a leash since he will have to do his business.

2. Did you check with the airline?

When traveling by plane it may be a bit more difficult. Planning will help to reduce stress and time wastage. Direct flights will be the best option as there will be minimal delays.

Airlines have guidelines that must be followed when traveling with a dog. These specify things such as dog travel carrier type, food and water before trip etc. Make sure to check these on the airline website or call the airline before traveling.

3. Is this your dog’s first trip?

Your dog should be prepared for his trip. A dog that has only traveled to the vet all his life may be apprehensive when traveling by car. Short trips to places such as the beach will get him accustomed to the car. Make sure your dog gets a checkup from the vet before traveling to ensure that he is in good health. Your dog should be comfortable around other people since he will encounter many strangers when traveling.

4. What food are you taking?

Ensure you carry the same food you normally feed your dog. This will be a totally new environment for your dog and you don’t want to add further stress with strange foods. It may also be a good idea to only let him drink filtered water to avoid any problems.

I hope these tips allow your trips to go a little smoother.
